5-Day Art Challenge - DAY 2

Hello Everyone! This is DAY 2 of the Facebook art challenge posting 3 artworks each day over 5 days. (No sense in Facebook having all of the fun, so I'm posting it here, too!) Warm thanks to Debbie Lamey MacDonald, a Nova Scotia artist, for nominating me.

In my world, pets are family. And, there's nothing I  love more to photograph is capturing the relationship of a person and their animal companions.

Capturing a natural interaction, not a forced hug or holding a dog still, is tricky though. While a person can be directed to smile and look at the camera, a pet is easily distracted by its surroundings. So, photos like this usually require me to take a series of candid, quick shots....hoping to capture that one photo that works. The one photo where the composition works, the expression on both the person and pet is natural, and the pet's gesture is relaxed.

The first photo, taken for a class project, is of my niece and her lopped-eared rabbit. Can you tell that she adores her?

The second photo, taken during a shoot for senior pictures, was shot beside a local lake. The quacking and honking of ducks and geese, and the scurrying of squirrels in the Fall leaves couldn't have been more of a distraction for this happy dog. At least 20 shutter clicks and this one materialized where both subjects are in perfect post.

The third photo was taken randomly at North Myrtle Beach this past July. As I was walking the beach at sunrise with my camera, a young gentleman stepped up to the surf with his beautiful golden retriever then started walking along the water. Had I asked him if I could take his picture, I am sure he would have stopped what he was doing and stooped to hug the dog and look at the camera...creating a forced, posed photo. Instead, I said nothing and started clicking my camera as he saunters along the low tide with his dog happily trotting along with him. My only regret is that I didn't catch up with him to get his contact information. I'd love the opportunity to send him the photo, so if you recognize him, please put us in touch with each other!

You can't always wait for what you think are the best conditions for a photo. The rabbit photo was taken in early spring, the grass just beginning to show signs of  green -- not the optimal bright Spring green you'd expect. Yet the bright purple shirt and sweet expressions still carry the photo despite any brown grass.

The second photo was take in late Fall after many of the leaves had already fallen. A teens incredibly busy schedule and a soggy Fall hampered scheduling. I began to question whether I was even going to get a good Fall photo for the family. In late afternoon, with about 1/2 hour of descent sunlight remaining, the sycamore tree in the background provided the perfect composition.

The third photo, well, it was pure luck. The low tide and early morning cloud cover just happened. I was at the right place and the right time. No planning. *click*

So, the one person I know that knows the camera better than anyone I know (did I say "know" enough?), is Patrick Early, so I nominate Patrick to participate in the 5-day Facebook art challenge!

Illustrating A Dog-Gone Cute Christmas Card!

Ta-dah!...presenting "Shelby and Santa"! A dear friend asked me to create an illustration of her dog to include in her Christmas card design this year. I couldn't resist the opportunity.

It may seem an easy task to just put the pencil to paper and out comes the drawing. But, it takes some time to mull over the illustration, jumbling it around in your head for weeks, penciling rough sketches, contemplating it some more, re-sketching....until you finally feel like the illustration is working.

With that said, I thought it would be of interest to post a blog about how this fun illustration came to be.

First, about 20 photos of the adorable canine subject, Shelby, were sent to me as reference material. Here's a peek at two:

After looking at the photos and getting a feel for Shelby's gestures, colors, facial expressions and more, my next step was a bit of mulling over how to approach the illustration.

What should the dog be doing? Is Santa in the sketch? Is she under a Christmas tree? Is she unwrapping a present? sledding? hanging out with snowmen? under the mistletoe?

Then, rough sketches over a few weeks helped me work out a composition that flowed:

Santa holding Shelby in his lap didn't seem to work, but I wanted to portray a warm, friendly interaction between the two of them:

This one seemed too flat and stagnant, but I'm liking the paw/hand idea:

Shelby's face seemed too rigid and the position too stiff:

Hmmmm...now I'm sorta liking this approach. Shelby giving a sweet, backwards glance:

Ahhhh, and now it's got a good flow going. A doggie-pat on the head, and a pet down the back. Who knew that Santa was a dog lover?!

Merry Christmas to all!
And, as my dear friend noted, be sure to leave a little doggie treat along with the milk and cookies on Christmas Eve....just in case Santa brings Shelby along for the sleigh ride! *woof*

Hot Diggity Dogs and More...at Rehoboth Beach, DE

Hubby and I savored a few last dog days of summer at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware....thanks to the generosity of friends.

Hot diggity dog, this beautiful girl, Daisy, (below!) was more than happy to pose for her portrait.

A jellyfish glistens.

An endless game of fetch. The owner told me I'd have at least 258 opportunities just that day to take a picture!

Peacefulness amid the warm, soft sand dunes.

Some fun with shells and surf-smoothed stones. Meow!

A sweetie-pie named Sadie trolling along the beach just lookin' to give someone a great big smooch.

We found ourselves strolling through this flower shop during a rainy afternoon.

Delightful, bright red cardinals were on sale there, and benefitted wildbird sanctuaries along the shore. A perfect addition to our flower gardens.

And, Jasper, the resident flower shop dog, soaked in all of the attention, then wasted no time showing us where his treats were located!

I bumped into this honey of a hot dog along the boardwalk! That's my hubby for those who don't know ;)

Out to sea.

And, last but not least, this fella, who we called Ted, just wouldn't leave us alone. We'll save that story for my next blog post!

Rejuvenating the Artist's Soul at N. Myrtle Beach

Nothing is more rejuvenating for the artist's soul than a week of soaking in the sunshine, toes digging into the warm, soft sand, enjoying the sights and sounds of the ebb and flow of the tide crashing in and sliding back out to sea. Absolutely mindless.

Come along with me to see the colors, shapes, and sounds of a soul-refreshing week at North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

These navy blue beach chairs are calling your name.

Nature shows us her intricate designs in the dune grasses.

A little one's tools of the trade, ready to dig in and get creative.

Someone else already did.

A Dad next door was having a blast sculpting this enormous sea turtle.

Comedian Steven Wright tells of having a seashell collection. And then delivers in his deadpan voice, "perhaps you've seen it. It's scattered on beaches all over the world".

Tiny shells in sandy colors, stripes, and whites.

Dragons.

And, dragonflies.

So many dog pals to meet of all shapes, sizes and colors:

Arizona and company.

Super-cute puppy, Digit.

Aussie, Buster.

And handsome Ertle.

Ohhh...and here comes another little cutie-pie...

A irresistable array of colorful soda bottles catch the eye at Barefoot Landing, and quench hubby's thirst.

And, "yes", these sweet bunnies told me that "It's time that I will be meeting new friends."

Bright, vibrant lights at Joe's Crab Shack set a festive mood.

One more day...

Awwwww....a loving, heartful message written in the sand.

Colorful skim boards await a run in the surf.

It would be SO easy to sit here for weeks on end and then another weekend.

Here's an extra treat for you. Take a minute to enjoy the soothing waves before you leave.
