5-Day Art Challenge - DAY 5

Hello Everyone! Today is DAY 5 of the 5-Day Facebook Art Challenge. (But, why let Facebook have all of the fun? That's why I'm posting it here, too). A warm thank you to Debbie Lamey MacDonald, a Nova Scotia artist, for nominating me.

For today’s post, I am sharing with you several commissioned pieces – two fine art paintings and two pet illustrations.

The Dogwood Blossom painting is a 30” x 30”, oil on canvas, painted from photographs that I took at a local nursery. I am super pleased with the oil paints by M. Graham that are based with walnut oil and offer such vibrancy.

The painting of delphiniums is a work-in-progress that I am painting right now for a client. It’s 30” x 30”, oil on canvas. Again, I am using my own reference photos that I took over the summer. Not only are delphiniums difficult to grow, they are difficult to find to photograph!

My pet illustration, Cake Cats, was a pet illustration commission from last year. My client provided photos of her daughter’s cats and gave me a list of interest of her daughter and son-in-law. Her daughter loves to make cakes, loves Gerber daisies and her son-in-law is a Bills fan. In-progress photos and sketches of this project can be seen on my website. Gouache and colored pencil on vellum, 5” x 7”.

The Santa and dog illustration was a pet commission for a past Christmas card. The client provided photos of her mixed breed hound. Gouache and colored pencil on vellum, 5” x 5”. You can read about the process of drawing this illustration, here: http://cherylkugler.blogspot.com/2009/12/illustrating-dog-gone-cute-christmas.html

On my last day of this challenge, I nominate TatyanaStarikova, a talented illustrator who I met during a workshop at Highlights Foundation called “Mastering the Picture Book”.

The Ornithologist and the BirdBath Spa

The Ornithologist and the BirdBath Spa:
Lucky for this ornithologist (or maybe, lucky for the birds) the BirdBath Spa is dry today. Come tomorrow, it should be brimming with rain water if the forecast holds true. Regardless, she has made herself right at home. >^..^<

What kinds of birds show up at your birdbath?

Goodness, what big eyes you have.....(the better to see you with, my dear)

What a big nose you have....(the better to smell you with)

What a big mouth you have (the better to eat you with).... Or, better yet, after that big yawn he's ready for a cat nap. >^..^<

What do you think of this fella? Not quite the big bad wolf, eh?!

Furniture Photo Shoot in the Garden

The "pink snow" falling from last week's blooming crab apples provided the perfect backdrop to photograph my latest decorative painting project: a fabulously French side board. (previously red). The Creative Director showed up to make sure the shoot was going according to plan...

The Creative Director arrives.

CSI of the Cookie Jar!/Sparkle Magazine Illo

Somebody stole the cookies from the cookie jar! A crime scene investigation is underway. That's the latest illustration I just completed for Sparkle Magazine/GEMS Girls Clubs.

The Final Illustration:

The Sketch:

A thumbprint from the illustration below will be added beside each family member's photo at the bottom of the illustration. The Sparkle graphic designer will then add thumbprints throughout the illustration, and the young reader will have to figure out 'who did it'!

Sebastian & Sylvester/Two Cats Play Amid Roses and Cardinals

A pure-hearted cat lover's two feline companions playfully interact with a crimson red cardinal in a summer garden of soft-hued roses, while Mrs. Cardinal watches from the bush.

The Final Illustration:

The Stars:

....introducing Sylvester!

....introducing Sebastian (aka Junior)!

A few thumbnails...trying to figure out the composition:

The Challenge:

I must say, I was a bit intimidated with figuring out how to build depth in the fur of a black cat. Some lavendars and blues did the trick!

Believe it or not, I started this illustration about a year ago. Amid painting, drawing, and photography classes, painting a chair for CHAIRity, a violin for a symphony's Painted Violin project (post to come!), and wonderfully fun children's magazine illustrations....this cat illustration has taken a back seat. It feels great to have it on paper smiling back at me! ;)
